Are You Planning for CNY? (Part I)

(This is Part I of our Chinese New Year planning installment. Stay tuned for Part II next week.)

Chinese New Year (CNY) goes mostly unnoticed here in the US, but there is a very good reason you should pay close attention to and plan for the largest Chinese holiday of the year.

Chinese New Year or Spring Festival is the most important traditional Chinese holiday. It can begin as early as the last week of January and continue throughout the entire month of February. During the weeks surrounding Chinese New Year migrant workers from all over China and around the world travel home to have reunion dinners and celebrate the lunar New Year with their families. For some, this is the first time in a year or more that they have been able to visit with their families and return to the villages in which they grew up. There are so many people traveling to and around China during this time of year that it is widely recognized as the largest annual human migration in the world.

If this is your first CNY then you may be wondering why we are bringing this up now, in September. As you may or may not have heard (and we know there are plenty of horror stories out there), all this travel means that business in China comes to a screeching halt for the durations of CNY. Factories stop producing, ships stop sailing and most importantly almost all exports from China and the surrounding areas stop altogether.

So what does this mean for you? With a little planning and some help from East West, CNY can be little more than a passing blip on the screen. We have years of experience planning for CNY and seasoned suppliers that know how important it is to eliminate any possible down time. If you currently use East West’s Demand Planning tool we have a built-in algorithm that accounts for this yearly lull in production. If you do not currently use EW’s Demand Planning tool, simply call us and we will consult with you individually about your specific situation and make sure all your production needs are covered. We are happy to offer this consulting service to all of our customers, every year, free of charge. So please be sure that take advantage.

Chinese New Year may not begin until Feb. 10th 2013 but planning starts TODAY.
